First, damp fibers bind soil, so a salted rug loads faster than an inland one. Second, persistent moisture at the foundation is exactly what mildew needs; that closed-house smell is the foundation talking. Why Vacuuming Can't Fix It

A vacuum works the top third of the pile. Salt and sand migrate to the bottom, against the backing, where suction barely registers. Washing in early fall clears the season completely and puts the rug into the closed-window months clean.

Reading the Warning Signs

Between washes, three signals say a rug needs attention now rather than at the next scheduled visit. A musty note that returns within a day of airing the room means the foundation is holding moisture. Colors that look better after vacuuming but dull again within a week mean soil is wicking up from the base. And fringe that feels brittle or looks gray at the roots means salt has concentrated there — fringe is cotton on most rugs and takes salt damage first.

Placement Tricks That Buy Time

You can't keep the shore out, but you can slow it down. A quality rug pad lifts the foundation off the floor and lets it breathe, cutting the damp problem meaningfully. Rotating the rug twice a year distributes the traffic that grinds the salt. And in rooms with direct beach access, a washable flat cotton runner at the door catches the heaviest sand before it reaches the good wool. None of it replaces washing — it just makes each wash last longer.
